Role of Posters Now and Then |
The industry of posters may not look so impressive like, for example,
publishing or movie distribution, but it has the market and target
groups all over the world. At the same time vintage posters take a
special place among all poster products and, of course, there is a good
reason for that. First of all, it is hard to come across pure art
posters, because from the very beginning all posters have been more
commercial products than anything else. Right upon its birth, posters
represented a new trend, some kind of developing art form that should
make to reduce costs for printed materials intended for mass production
within some particular region. The low cost production dictated simple
design posters printed with limited number of colors, and this tendency
stays maintained today.
Because of their social function, it is possible to say that there
exist inspirational posters only, or almost all of them are close to
that. That seems so as posters have always been created to instigate
people to do something or believe in something that might be not
entirely tangible or real. The last thing is very true when it comes to
kids posters, depicting fairy tale characters, their adventures and so
on. It would be unfair to neglect some educational functions of
posters, but school aids take completely different niche in printed
products production as of now.
It may look surprising, but all existing functions of posters existed
earlier as well, and now posters have just another life, i.e. a new
life within somewhat updated environment and more advanced
technologies. Thus, for example, education of common people was not the
only function of posters in the past as in most cases, if that was not
about some kind of direct publicity, then posters carried a good load
of visual propaganda targeted to a particular range of people and their
brains.
Today something like that may happen as well, but it is less obvious
and more discreet than ever before, mainly because people got more
educated on average and there exist many other sources of information
that the people use very often, too. Nevertheless, printed materials
are in fashion now and their role cannot be neglected completely
because they can do many things themselves and, here comes the most
interesting part, those posters may be a good-selling products in
addition. That latter feature of this kind of merchandise deserves some
special attention as too few kinds of goods may provide ads for their
own selling, not mentioning that posters promote many others that are
represented on them. It may happen that exactly this feature of posters
was noted by many merchants on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. Now
posters and everything around them create the groundwork for
contemporary ad and marketing sectors in all countries of the world.
Simple posters, as everyone knows them now, help a lot to people every
day, but nobody may say for sure what another function of poster may
arise in the future. |
